If you are a licensed driver in the state of Michigan, you may have asked yourself, “What is uninsured motorist coverage, and why do I need it?” The answer is simple– because far too many drivers are not insured, and if one of them causes an accident, you may be left covering the damages.

The State of Michigan reportedly has over 7.2 million licensed drivers. And like it or not, it’s the law within the State of Michigan that all registered owners of motor vehicles are required to have basic no-fault insurance for any motor vehicle that they decide to put on the road. Despite this, it is estimated that approximately 65% of the city’s drivers have no valid auto insurance in place. That is a very bad and scary stat for the remaining 35% of drivers within the City of Detroit who are abiding by the law and thus are properly insured. Even outside the city limits, it’s estimated that 1 in 5 drivers are not properly insured. This means that, as a responsible car owner and driver, having uninsured and underinsured privacy provisions for yourself and your family is not only smart, it’s essential.

What is Uninsured Motorist Coverage?

Uninsured motorist coverage is an optional addition to your auto insurance policy that protects you if you are injured in an accident that is caused by a driver that does not have insurance. This can help you cover necessary bills and costs that accumulate as a result of the accident when the at-fault driver cannot. There is also underinsured motorist coverage. This applies if the at-fault driver has insurance, but not enough to cover the full extent of damages caused by the accident.

Why Do I Need It?

As a responsible car owner and driver you should make sure that you have both uninsured and underinsured policy provisions in the appropriate amounts for yourself and your family. Together, these ensure that you and your family are protected from that 65% of drivers out there that are driving with no insurance. In the case that an uninsured driver causes a serious motor vehicle accident that results in either you or your loved ones being seriously injured, you will be able to receive the compensation you deserve for any pain and suffering that you experience.

The cost to obtain both uninsured and underinsured coverage on your existing Michigan Automobile No-Fault insurance policy is extremely reasonable and something that no responsible driver can afford to go without.

Protect Yourself and Your Family

As a Michigan resident and auto owner or driver, you should have, at the very minimum, both the basic state required auto no-fault insurance, as well as uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage. You’ll feel better knowing that you and your loved ones will have the proper coverage in place should you ever need it.

It’s the smart thing to do; especially if you are a gainfully employed person and have a family that loves and counts on your financial support and overall well-being. So, in both my personal and professional opinion, as a proud Michigander, always carrying uninsured and underinsured auto insurance coverage, is simply being “Midwest Smart”.
